About Us

Giving LibraryThe University of Michigan Health System has a long-standing tradition of volunteerism. More than 60 years ago, the first formal volunteer program began with 55 townspeople and 140 students providing care to patients and augmenting the work of the “ Old Main” Hospital staff.

Today, the “Old Main” Hospital is gone and the “New” University of Michigan Hospital is 25 years old. Volunteers play an integral role in augmenting the work of hospital staff and providing caring and compassionate support to our patients and their families. Several other hospitals, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital, the Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Cardiovascular Center, have joined the University Hospital. In addition, both the Ronald McDonald House and the new Ronald McDonald House Within C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital offer accommodations to families with critically ill children.

Volunteer opportunities are not limited to the main hospital campus. The medical campus has expanded to include the East Ann Arbor Health Center, the Surgical Center and the Rachel Upjohn Building, as well as clinics at Domino Farms. In addition, there are health centers throughout southeast Michigan. Volunteers are also needed for our community outreach programs including the Friends Gift Shops, the Housing Bureau for Seniors, Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels, and the Turner Senior Resource Center.

Volunteer Services, a program of Community Health Services, would like to thank all of the volunteers who have supported our patients, families, and care providers throughout our 75 year history. Clearly much has changed, but one tradition stands strong — our Volunteers!
