The University of Michigan Health System and Great Lakes Health Connect (GLHC), have united to exchange health information with UMHS affiliated providers and organizations across the state of Michigan.

  • What is a Health Information Exchange? A Health Information Exchange allows providers to securely share patient information electronically, preventing medical errors and avoiding test duplication. A Health Information Exchange makes it possible for UMHS and non-UMHS providers to share real-time access to health information for patients in the UMHS network and for patients not in the UMHS network. Having the information readily available is important for improving patient care locally and across the state.
  • What information is being shared with the Great Lakes Health Connect? Providers will be able to view health information which includes clinical documents, laboratory results, x-rays reports, and demographic information.
  • What are the benefits for you to consider joining the Great Lakes Health Connect too? You will be able to send UMHS an electronic referral; you will be able to get direct GLHC EMR data into your Practice EMR system.
  • What is the vision for Health Information Exchange in Michigan? Providers at all health care organizations across Michigan will be able to securely share patient information electronically. The broader vision for the future is that the Nationwide Health Information Network would connect all of the state-based health information networks.
