Level 1 Password:
(Background, Level1 Services, Technical Description, More password information)

BACKGROUND:
The Level -1 password system is the MCIT-preferred approach to accessing UMHS systems and services in a secure, encrypted manner. The Level - 1 password system requires remote access users to enter their uniqname and Kerberos password to access the network, and then enter their (Level2) application user name and password to access a secure application. This ensures that only authorized users gain access to the server and applications behind it. Only secure web-enabled services may be accessed remotely.

LEVEL-1 SERVICES:

TECHNICAL EXPLANATION:

The UMHS internal network includes (a) workstations and ports that are physically located in UMHS facilities (on‑campus and off‑site); and (b) UMHS modem pool connections.  Other types of connections (cable modem, DSL line, AOL, etc.) are outside the UMHS network.

Level-1 Authentication Service, often referred to as the "firewall," is the system that allows authorized users to access the UMHS internal network from external connections.  This is a key part of the security infrastructure that protects UMHS patient data and proprietary information.

To date, Level 1 has been used primarily to make CareWeb available to remote users.  Now it is evolving to become a single point of access to all internal UMHS web-based information resources.  The URL http://level1.med.umich.edu can be bookmarked by users and can be used to link a variety of web applications to Level 1.

More information about Level1 and other passwords is available. If you have questions or encounter problems related to remote access, please contact the MCIT Help Desk at 936-8000.
