Restaurants
- Zingerman’s
Food & Wine Magazine named Zingerman's Delicatessen to its list of the 25 best food markets in the world. San Francisco’s Ferry Plaza Farmers Market was the only other U.S. name on the list. The common factor was the high quality of their products. (We double dare you to finish one of Zingerman’s sandwiches in one sitting.)
- Washtenaw Dairy
Washtenaw Dairy is an Ann Arbor tradition. Grab some ice cream and sit outside to people watch. It’s open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day except Christmas, and it’s a quick place to pick up milk, eggs, cheese, bread and soda. Hint: Get your tot the kid-sized cone. It will be big enough.
- Jerusalem Garden
307 S. Fifth Avenue
995-5060
This Middle Eastern diner is small in size and big on flavor. Many people prefer to do take-out because seating is limited. (Order everything you like. The prices are great.)

Charlie's Mediterranean Cuisine
2370 Carpenter
973-2737
Charlie's Mediterranean Cuisine sports a huge menu of delicious Middle Eastern dishes. They’re part of a popular Detroit-area chain, but don’t hold that against them. (We have yet to have something here we didn’t like.) -
Godaiko
3115 Oak Valley (Village Centre)
930-2880
Godaiko serves traditional Japanese cuisine, including sushi and sashimi. In the tatami room, diners sit on traditional Japanese mats. -
Great Lake Chinese Seafood Restaurant
2910 Carpenter
973-6666
Chinese cuisine, including Hong Kong-style seafood dishes. (We love all the seafood and the sesame broccoli.) If you have kids, they’ll be fascinated by the lobsters and fish in tanks. And yes, you can select the one you’ll have for dinner. -
Fleetwood Diner
300 S. Ashley
995-5502
We love the Fleetwood because it’s a real diner, cheap and open 24 hours a day. Our favorite dish is Hippie Hash, a mixture of hash browns, vegetables and cheese. You won’t go away hungry. -
Common Grill
Chef Craig Common sees to it that the food at his upscale bistro is uncommonly good. Gourmet Magazine praised The Common Grill for its “fresh, novelty American dishes.” (This is a great place to take your parents, especially if you think they’ll insist on picking up the check.) -
Champion House
120 E. Liberty
741-8100
With Chinese on one side and a Japanese steak house on the other, could you ask for anything more? They’re located in downtown Ann Arbor near Main Street. -
Blue Nile
The Blue Nile specializes in indigenous Ethiopian Cuisine: vegetarian, beef, lamb and poultry. The delicious food and their all-you-can-eat menu choices make this one of Ann Arbor’s most popular restaurants. (Even their tea is to die for.)
