Downtown Conor O'Neils Irish Pub on Main Street

You can sum up Ann Arbor’s approach to food in one word: Yum! Here’s why.

First of all, we have more than 200 restaurants – ranging from “traditional American” cuisine to every ethnic specialty you can imagine. And, of course, fast and convenience food places such as Taco Bell, are plentiful (at last count, to the tune of 1,000). In addition, the nearby quaint towns of Chelsea, Dexter, Dixboro, Manchester, Plymouth and Saline have more than their fair share of excellent cuisine – and it only takes 15 or 20 minutes to get there.

Second, grocery stores are plentiful. The bigger chains often stay open 24 hours a day, which is a great relief for those of us with busy schedules. We’ve noted the stores that primarily carry organic foods, but we’re happy to report that the organics sections in the chains stores are getting bigger all the time.

And nobody can beat our local farmers markets for fresh food or even sheer entertainment value. They all have distinct personalities and carry more than food, such as gift items, cut flowers, perennials and crafts. It’s not unusual to hear a free music show at the markets. We’ve seen everything from African Drum groups to Irish Folk groups.

Here are some of our favorite places to nosh or buy groceries.
