University of Michigan Women's Health Program

The Women's Health Program received national recognition as a model center in 1997 when the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services named the University of Michigan a National Center of Excellence in Women's Health. Only 18 medical centers in the United States received this high honor for their dedication to women's health issues and proven commitment to the provision of the highest-quality women's services possible. This recognition, awarded for a four-year period, is important to us, as it provides great opportunities for expansion of our community outreach and health education services designed specifically for women.
The National Centers of Excellence Project--our model center--features five focus areas: Clinical Care, Education, Academic Leadership, Women's Health Research, and Community Outreach & Involvement.
Clinical Care
The Women's Health Program is comprised of a broad range of primary care and specialty services for women at all stages of life. Our Center of Excellence emphasizes convenient, compassionate, and coordinated clinical services designed especially for women, and features health care providers who are sensitive and knowledgeable about women's unique health care needs.
Education
The Center of Excellence recognizes the importance of educating health care providers so they may provide informed, sensitive, and up-to-date medical care to women. To this end, the Center has reviewed and revised the medical school curriculum and regularly offers continuing medical education opportunities that focus on women and women's health issues.
Academic Leadership
A priority of the National Centers of Excellence project is to increase the number of women in health care leadership positions. The Women's Health Program Center of Excellence is implementing a plan to enhance the recruitment, retention, and promotion of women in academic medicine.
Women's Health Research
Building on the strengths of the rich research environment that exist across all schools and departments at the University of Michigan, the Women's Health Program Center of Excellence seeks to facilitate collaboration among existing programs, while stimulating new research at all levels. Our Women's Health Registry is designed to provide opportunities for women in the community to learn more about the importance of participating in women's health research and will help those interested find ways to become involved.
Community Outreach & Involvement
The Women's Health Program strives to build and maintain solid bridges to women in the community and the providers who serve them. To this end, we host ongoing lecture series, health fairs, and community events for women and girls of all ages, often in partnership with community agencies. The Women's Health Resource Center is available for health education resources and assistance weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Resource Center is staffed by volunteers who field more than 6,000 inquiries per year! Volunteer opportunities always are available to those who are interested in becoming more involved with the Women's Health Program. |
