Know Your Options: Advancements in Reproductive Medicine
Every time she hears the good news that one of her patients is expecting a baby, Senait Fisseha, M.D., J.D., experiences the same incredible joy. As the chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility, medical director of the Center for Reproductive Medicine, director of In Vitro fertilization (IVF) and assistant professor in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Michigan Health System, Fisseha is part of the team that provides a variety of options for couples who are trying to conceive.
Fisseha explains that the Center for Reproductive Medicine at the University of Michigan offers patients both evidence-based medicine and complementary medicine.
Patients are able to benefit from:
- A couples infertility clinic, that allows a couple with male and female infertility issues to be seen simultaneously by a reproductive endocrinologist and a urologist.
- A highly respected Male Infertility Clinic which draws patients from across the state of Michigan.
- Fertility Preservation
Studies show that patients of reproductive age are not being routinely sent to fertility specialists before the start of treatments like chemotherapy that can damage their fertility. The Fertility Preservation Program (FP), provides counseling and education services, as well as semen collection and storage for male patients; and oocyte (egg) and Embryo harvesting and storage services as well as medical treatment with hormones for female patients. Fisseha says that even if patients decide not to pursue these options, consultation is important because it allows them to feel like part of the decision making process. - Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) gives parents who carry genes for certain inherited genetic disorders, the opportunity to conceive without passing along the genetic abnormality.
- Convenience
All diagnostic procedures for male and female patients as well as monitoring blood tests, sperm analysis, ultrasounds are done at the clinic, so patients aren't sent from one building to another for various services. The center offers convenient, free parking in a private location.
Success
The clinic has a very successful IVF laboratory with pregnancy rates per embryo transfer exceeding national rates. Fisseha says, "We share the joy of our patients. We are part of the journey from their hope to life."
