Checking Out Women’s Health

Volunteers have always made a major impact on the services the University of Michigan Women’s Health Resource Center provides. Recently, two University of Michigan students found a way to make the center’s extensive resources even more beneficial. They created a lending library that offers more than 500 books available to U-M patients, staff, and the community. Maggie Kelly, a former volunteer who is now Program Assistant, and Andrea Knittel, who has volunteered for more than a year, dedicated their time and ingenuity to help other women access information in an environment that promotes informed health decisions.

The new program has generated a lot of positive feedback. “I don’t think we realized how wide the appeal would be,” Knittel says. Before the Lending Library existed, women relied on photocopies. Knittel says they can now save paper and time. “Many women find it convenient that they can return books during their next appointment, or that they can check out several books at a time,” Kelly adds.
