Championing Women’s Health

What is women’s health? If you ask Debbi Smith, Coordinator, University of Michigan Women’s Health Resource Center, and Coordinator of the Community Women and Adolescent Health Resource Centers, she’ll tell you the definition is much broader than the topics most people may think of—such as pregnancy and breast cancer. In fact, in its mission to provide free health information to women, the University of Michigan Women’s Health Resource Center strives to answer any question a woman may ask about herself or her friends or family members.

A Commitment to Women’s Services

That commitment to providing the services and resources women ask for and need has been key to the center throughout its 10-year history. Juliet Rogers, Associate Hospital Administrator and Director, Women’s Health Program, became the Center’s first paid employee when she was still a U-M student. Rogers invested time in benchmarking against other centers and conducting focus groups to create a resource center that meets the needs of women in the communities it serves. Rogers credits the work of Patricia Warner, Associate Hospital Director and Chief Administrative Officer, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, The University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers, and Timothy Johnson, M.D., Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Michigan Health System, for the success of the Women’s Health Program and resource center. “This was their dream. They are the champions of women’s health,” Rogers says.

The most popular resource the center offers is free computer and Internet access. Health information requests—which are available over the phone, in person, or online at www.med.umich.edu/whp/contact.htm—are the second most popular source of health information. “We’re able to give women the latest information,” Rogers says. Not only is the information current, it is quickly available. In most cases, the resource center staff and volunteers are able to mail information the same day they receive the request.

National Recognition

That commitment to quality is recognized in the center’s designation as a National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health, as assigned by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health. There are only 21 National Centers of Excellence in the country; the next closest is in Chicago.

The center is located on the first floor of the Taubman Center next to the OB/GYN waiting room. While this location makes it especially convenient for women who have an appointment, everyone is welcome to visit the center Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Whatever the women’s health topic, the staff and volunteers are ready to help.
