About Us

The University of Michigan Health System has a long-standing tradition of volunteerism. More than 60 years ago, the first formal volunteer program began with 55 townspeople and 140 students providing care to patients and augmenting the work of the “Old Main” Hospital staff.

Today, the “Old Main” Hospital is gone and the “New” University of Michigan Hospital is 20 years old. Volunteers still play an integral role in augmenting the work of hospital staff and providing caring and compassionate support to our patients and their families. Two other hospitals (CS Mott Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital) have joined the University Hospital. In addition, there are health centers throughout southeast Michigan and volunteer opportunities are not limited to the main hospital campus, that also includes the Comprehensive Cancer Center and soon to be open Cardiovascular Center and in October 2006, we broke ground on the new children’s and women’s hospital. The medical campus has expanded to include the East Ann Arbor Health Center, the Surgical Center and the Rachel Upjohn Building, as well clinics at Domino Farms. Volunteers are needed at our community outreach programs such, Housing Bureau for Seniors, Motor Meals, and the Turner Senior Resource Center. Clearly much has changed, but one tradition stands strong – our volunteers.
