Vector Core

Instructions: Internal (UM) Investigators   |   External Investigators

Forms:
Internal Service Request Form
Internal shRNA Request Form
External Service Request Form

For Internal Investigators at the University of Michigan:

1. All recombinant DNA work using viral vectors must be registered with the University of Michigan Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). The purpose of this committee is to ensure the safety of University employees by tracking recombinant DNA work at the University of Michigan. Registration is available at the IBC website. Approval of registered rDNA work typically occurs within two weeks. (Note: Registration required for all new viruses, and any modifications to previously registered viruses.)

2. Fill in the on-line Service Request Form or shRNA Service Request Form and forward to the Vector Core Lab Supervisor or bring a copy to 3554 MSRB II. Note: Request forms (PDF format) can only be saved in Adobe Acrobat Pro. If not able to save, print as PDF, fax it to us, or contact us for request form in MS Word format.

phone: (734) 764-5201
fax: (734) 764-3596

3. Feel free to contact the Vector Core Lab Supervisor or to stop into the Vector Core lab in 3554 MSRB II to talk to our staff should you have any questions during the process.

For External Investigators OUTSIDE of the University of Michigan:

1. All recombinant DNA work with viral vectors must be registered with the University of Michigan Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)*. This registration is a safety precaution to protect our employees from possible safety concerns. The IBC committee is responsible for tracking recombinant DNA work at the University of Michigan. If an investigator wishes to have the University of Michigan Vector Core create, propagate or purify a custom vector, then a registration application must be submitted on-line to the Institutional Biosafety Committee using the form for EXTERNAL investigators.

*NOTE: Purchase of a Vector Core stock virus or plasmid does not require University of Michigan IBC registration.

2. Fill in the Service Request Form and the Service Agreement and forward to the Vector Core Lab Supervisor.

3. Evidence of payment must be received before the product can be shipped.

4. A Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) must be signed between your institution and the University of Michigan. We realize that filling out the form can be a rather involved task, so we have used a standard NIH MTA, which most institutions are very familiar with. The document is organized as a form in Microsoft Word and requires that the darkened boxes be completed.

a. Standard MTA for all Vector Core plasmids and viruses except the lentiviral pLentilox plasmids and viruses.

b. pLentilox 3.7 proviral plasmid belongs to MIT. To acquire the MTA for pLentilox3.7 proviral plasmid please contact MIT. Once the MTA is processed, the Vector Core can provide the plasmid.

c. For all other pLentilox proviral plasmids and viruses: Click here for the pLentilox MTA.

5. Feel free to contact the Vector Core Lab Supervisor, Tom Lanigan at (734) 764-5201 or lanigant@umich.edu if you should have any questions during the process.
