Dr. Will Roberts, Associate Professor of Urology and Biomedical Engineering, recipient of the 2014 AUA Gold Cystoscope Award
It is our great pleasure to announce that Dr. William Roberts, Associate Professor of Urology and Biomedical Engineering, has been selected as the recipient of the 2014 AUA Gold Cystoscope Award*, for outstanding contributions in the areas of mechanical and cavitational tissue ablation through his role in the development and translation of histotripsy.
Dr. Roberts is a member of the multidisciplinary scientific team at the University of Michigan that developed histotripsy, a non-invasive, focused ultrasound technology that induces controlled cavitation to mechanically ablate targeted tissues within the body. He is the director of the Translational Histotripsy Laboratory and has led the research effort to apply histotripsy for treatment of urologic diseases in preclinical models.
Dr. Roberts is a founder of HistoSonics, Inc., a start-up company created in 2009 to translate histotripsy technology from the research laboratory to human clinical use. He continues to provide clinical and technical guidance to the company and serves as chairman of the clinical advisory board. HistoSonics recently began an FDA-approved pilot human trial of histotripsy treatment for men with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
This research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, American Urological Association Foundation, Coulter Foundation, and Engineering and Urology Society.
*The Gold Cystoscope Award may be presented annually to a urologist distinguished by outstanding contributions to the profession within ten (10) years of completing residency training. This award is sponsored by Gyrus ACMI, an Olympus Group Company
