WHEELS in Motion
Dr. Margaret Scisney-Matlock, RN, MSN, PhD, FAAN, Professor, University of Michigan, School of Nursing and Former Director Acute,
Critical and Long Term Programs, is nationally recognized as a nursing scientist, scholar, and educator. For over two decades,
her research has focused on transforming the understanding and care of patients with hypertension--high blood pressure-- through
development and testing of cognitive-behavioral interventions based on the assessment of relationship between cognitive
representations of disease--self descriptions of beliefs, attitudes, and intentions of behavior -- and actual health-related behavior.
Since 2007, she has expanded her research to provide a computerized clinical information program. The WHEELS-I Program, a
theoretically derived cognitive-behavioral intervention incorporated the National Institute's of Health, Dietary Approaches to Stop
Hypertension diet, (DASH) and daily self-appraisal activities to guide decisions to enhance sustained healthier eating habits
and improve blood pressure. As principal investigator on major grants, the most recent, funded by Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation
of Michigan, is to establish impact of WHEELS-I Program on blood pressure and weight in women from diverse backgrounds, and to lay
the foundation to communicate directly with healthcare providers and payors about the benefits of the WHEELS-I Program.
Her affiliation with MIC will provide unique opportunities to further examine the WHEELS-I Program for the translation to
clinical practice with potential for commercialization.
