Albert Shih, PhD, Associate Director
Dr. Shih is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, Associate Director
of the Medical Innovation Center, and Co-Director of the SM Wu Manufacturing Research Center at
the University of Michigan. After receiving his PhD from Purdue University in 1991, Dr. Shih worked
at Cummins Inc., where he developed precision machining technology for advanced engineering
materials in diesel engines and fuel systems. From 1998 to 2002, he was an Associate Professor in
the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at North Carolina State University. Dr.
Shih's research and teaching interests are in biomedical device design and manufacturing, machining
of advanced materials, and precision machine design. He has collaborated broadly with the faculty
and researchers at medical school and hospitals on the development of new medical devices and
systems.
