IMPORTANT: Please read the following carefully before you start creating files on the MCIT web document server. Failure to follow these conventions may cause unpredictable results and can also be difficult to correct later.

(However, if files you are currently publishing do not follow these conventions but still seem to work correctly, you should probably not try to correct them. If they aren't working correctly, see the UMHS Web FAQ to find out how to fix them.)

  • The file name of any web (HTML) document you want to publish must end with .html or .htm .
  • File names should contain only letters, digits, underscores ( _ ), dots (.) or dashes (-). They should not contain any other characters, or spaces.
  • File names should not exceed 32 characters.
  • Since our UMHS search engine only follows "live" links from already published pages, pages you are developing--and to which no other pages link--will not be returned as a search result. If you want to be sure that certain pages aren't returned as the result of a search , you can give your files or directories special names.

The easiest approach is to create a folder/directory called "test" and put all the files you want to protect there.
The following naming options are also available:

    Protected folder/directory names
develop, private, old, personal, temp, test, junk, newsite
Protected file names (* is a wild character)
    *.old, *.tmp

(Important: Using these folder and file names only works for the UMHS search engine.. Other search engines on the web may still be able to find pages you "protect" this way, so be aware of this when determining what kind of content you put on these pages. There are other methods you can use to try to protect web pages from other search engines, though none are foolproof.)

Tip: To produce a more concise URL for your project's main page, you can name the home page file index.html or index.htm and place it in your assigned folder/directory. The URL for your page can then be specified as:

http://www.med.umich.edu/project folder or directory /

without having to specify the name of the file itself.
