Determining Appropriate Discipline

  1. Consider validity of employee's explanation — is it reasonable?
    Be careful not to pre-assign blame;

  2. Investigate thoroughly;

  3. Consult with supervisor/manager or HR Consultant (review with HR is required for suspension or time off);

  4. Consider employee's length of service and past record;

  5. Consider departmental policies and be consistent with past practice. You may be setting new departmental guidelines!
