What is the Northern California Organ Transplant Support Group?

The Northern California Organ Transplant Support Group (NCOTSG) is a non-profit organization created to offer support and information to transplant patients and their families. Members include people waiting to get transplants, people who have had them, families of those who have donated organs, and others who are interested in the process.

The NCOTSG maintains communication with transplant support groups in adjoining areas and participates in health fairs. It also encourages member participation in National and World Transplant games.

The NCOTSG's mission is to engage in such activities and pursue such programs as are necessary and desirable for the welfare of its members, as related to organ transplant support, both before and after organ transplant surgery.

In addition, the group strives to educate the public about the need for organ donation, form a representative body capable of speaking with authority for members, and foster good fellowship and cooperation among the group.

NCOTSG member Rick McMorrow received a kidney transplant and a second chance at life with his wife Suzanne and son Ted.

Support services

The "Sunshine" committee provides support to ailing members and each month, a telephone tree contacts members to find out how they are and to lend support.

Video tape production

A 30-minute video tape is currently in production to enhance and promote organ donation nationwide.

The NCOTSG History

The NCOTSG was founded in April, 1990, to meet the growing support needs of organ transplant patients, their families and friends.

The NCOTSG has been granted non-profit status by the Internal Revenue Service. Donations to the NCOTSG are tax deductible!

The NCOTSG membership currently includes more than 70 transplant recipients and about 250 families and is growing. Together they share their experiences, provide overwhelming support for patients and families, and work to increase organ donations.

The Gift of Life

The NCOTSG encourages everyone to sign and carry their donor cards. However, even if the potential donor has signed a donor card, the organs cannot be used without permission from the family.

In the case of your death, knowing your wishes about organ donation will make it much easier for distraught family members to decide whether to donate your organs and tissue.

What It Takes to Be a Donor

  1. Discuss the decision with your family now.
  2. Sign and carry a donor card.
