The National Donor Family Quilt

The Kid's Quilt

"The life of every person who dies needs to be commemorated if we are to teach young people that all lives have value."

-- Sandra Fox

Many donor families include children. Children who have suffered the loss of their mom, dad, sister, brother, grandma, grandpa or other family members. Sometimes they are the forgotten grievers. And yet children do grieve. Sandra Fox, an expert in children's grief, listed four tasks children need to work through when they are grieving. They include:

* Understanding or making sense out of the death

* Grieving, which is an ongoing process, sometimes continuing through adolescence

* Commemorating or remembering the person that died

* Going on to risk loving again and enjoying life.

To help our donor family kids commemorate their loved ones, we are beginning a KID'S QUILT. The quilt will be similar to PATCHES OF LOVE, THE NATIONAL DONOR FAMILY QUILT. It will recognize and remember our loved ones who died and help raise awareness about donation and transplantation.

Please have children through 18 years of age submit an 8 inch square, using any medium, such as paint, crayons, markers, or glitter. See pattern on back of this page. Please include name and age of child making the square in the lower right hand corner (if desired.) The name and dates of birth and death for whom the square is designed may also be included on the square.

Include the name, address and telephone number of the child (and parent) submitting the square on a separate sheet of paper.

KIDS QUILT SQUARES may be submitted at any time (there is no deadline) to:

KIDS QUILT National Donor Family Council 30 East 33rd Street New York, NY 10016.

If you have any questions regarding making a square, or about the National Donor Family Council, please call the NDFC at 800/622-9010.
