Peritoneal dialysis
Patient undergoing dialysis
Peritoneal dialysis also removes wastes from your body and restores chemical balance, but in a different way. Several times a day, you drain out the used dialysis solution (“dialysate”) through a tube that is surgically placed into your abdomen and replace it with clean solution. Wastes are removed from the body with the fluid as it drains out. This can be done at home or elsewhere, as long as the environment is clean, and takes about 45 minutes each time. Some people do peritoneal dialysis at night using an automated machine. This kind of dialysis increases the risk of peritonitis.

People who do peritoneal dialysis have several daily cycles of feeling good and then feeling bad.
