Lung Transplant Program

The first pioneering effort at lung transplantation in Michigan was performed in 1969. Following the successful development of improved immunosuppression and surgical techniques, lung transplantation at the University of Michigan was officially designated as a program under the umbrella of the Transplant Center in 1990. Since the program's inception, over 380 patients have undergone transplantation in the Lung Transplant Program at the University of Michigan.

Our program consists of a multidisciplinary team led by Andrew Chang, MD as Surgical Director and Kevin Chan, MD as Medical Director. The decision to perform transplantation is made when the physicians feel there is no other treatment for the patient's lung disease. The transplant doctors will determine whether a single or a double lung transplant is needed based on the patient's medical condition and history. The multidisciplinary team also includes the following resources dedicated to lung transplantation: medical and surgical physicians, social workers, transplant coordinators, transplant nursing, psychiatry, financial counselors, and insurance specialists.
