The liver transplant clinic is held every Monday and Friday morning and provides medical evaluation and consultation for adults with acute or chronic liver failure for which there is no effective alternative therapy. Newly referred patients are asked to complete a telephone interview and have all medical records, radiographs, and pathology reports sent to the transplant coordinator prior to the appointment. During the clinic visit, new patients are seen by a multidisciplinary team including a medical liver specialist (Hepatologist), transplant surgeon, transplant social worker, and nurse coordinator. Patients with advanced liver disease or cirrhosis of any cause with the following features are suitable referrals for this clinic:
- Internal bleeding or hemorrhaging from varices
- Fluid retention in the abdomen (ascites)
- Mental confusion (encephalopathy)
- Primary liver cancer (hepatoma)
- Generalized weakness or malnutrition
- Moderate liver failure (a CTP score >7)
- Inborn errors of metabolism (Glycogen storage disease)
