What is Telemedicine?
Telemedicine is the practice of medicine over distance through
the use of computers and telecommunications. In its simplest form,
telemedicine is medicine over a distance. Early telemedicine may
have been as simple as a patient or doctor telephoning another
doctor for advice and consultation. Today, telemedicine can bring a
geographically remote specialist into the actual examination room or
operating room via a live interactive system. Telemedicine
electronically transports the full range of medical care into remote
areas. Patients and physicians who live hours or days from advanced
medical care, or even basic services, can directly gain access to
high quality medical expertise without leaving their community.
Telemedicine can be synchronous, or provided through “real
time” video interactions. It can also be asynchronous, or
provided through “store and forward” technology. Store and forward
technology allows providers to transmit a patient’s health
information for review by another provider at a later time.
