![]() An international symposium on the state-of-the-art in telemedicine/ telehealth was held on the campus of the University of Michigan on August 23-25, 2001. Details of the program, sponsorship, and support are available on the original website under the appropriate labels. About 200 representatives from various parts of the United States as well as 13 countries attended the 2 ½ day symposium. The Dean of Medical School at the University of Michigan, Allen Lichter, offered welcoming remarks and officiated the opening session, which included the Director of the Department of Community Health in Michigan, James Haveman, and the President Pro Tempore of the Senate in Michigan, John Schwarz. The remainder of the first day was devoted to plenary presentations on the future of telemedicine/telehealth, networks, applications, and requirements. Each formal presentation was followed by discussants and audience participation. The second day featured 8 concurrent workshops. The topics of the workshops included the following: organizational models, technological requirements, legal/regulatory requirements, strategic/business aspects, clinical applications, public health, diffusion, and education. On the last ½ day, workshop moderators presented summary reports on their deliberations, and two speakers presented a future vision, Rick Satava and Sultan Bahabri. Work is now proceeding on the development of a summary report on the symposium and the publication of an edited volume. The plenary presentations are available online (Videotaped Presentations.)
