Hsiao-Ping Moore, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Lawrence Tech
A key mission of the Taubman Institute to establish a culture of collaboration wherever that can further the cause of medical science. To this end, we have been working with Hsiao-Ping Moore, Ph.D., the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Lawrence Tech, to develop working relationships between faculty from her new Life Sciences Program and colleagues in related disciplines here at U-M.
The initial discussions have centered on the areas of informatics and tissue engineering. However, Dr. Moore is working with Taubman Scholar Valerie Castle, M.D., to explore a possible collaboration in cancer research.
Tissue Engineering: A preliminary meeting took place with Joseph Corey, M.D., Ph.D., and Peter Ma, Ph.D., from the University of Michigan and Dr. Moore and Yawen Li, Ph.D., from Lawrence Tech. The group identified these potential areas of collaboration between the two schools:
- Participation of Lawrence Tech students in research in U-M laboratories
- Lawrence Tech faculty attending the seminars of the U-M Biomedical Engineering Department
- Collaborative research in the field of nanofiber technology
As a result of these discussions, the following actions have been planned:
- Dr. Corey will be presenting a lecture, “Nano-Fiber in Neural Growth” at Lawrence Tech on April 23. He will then meet with Lawrence Tech President Lewis Walker, Ph.D., and Provost Maria Vaz, Ph.D., on potential U-M projects involving Lawrence Tech students.
- Taubman Scholar Yehoash Raphael, Ph.D., has been invited to speak at Lawrence Teach in the fall. In addition, he has been invited to serve on the Life Sciences Advisory Board at Lawrence Tech.
Informatics: Similar discussions were held involving James Cavalcoli, Ph.D., and Kevin Smith, Ph.D., from U.M. and Lawrence Tech’s Dr. Moore, David Bindschadler, Ph.D., and Richard Bush, Ph.D. They mapped out these possible collaborations:
- U-M faculty presenting lectures at LT
- Lawrence Tech faculty attending seminars and lectures at U-M
- Lawrence Tech students and faculty participating in research projects at U-M
- Internships for LT students at U-M
- Joint research projects between Lawrence Tech and U-M scientists
Since then, the following has happened:
- Bioinformatics has begun to alert Lawrence Tech of upcoming lectures and seminars. Dr. Moore will be attending a lecture on Systems Biology at the U-M School of Engineering in April.
- Lawrence Tech plans to invite a U-M faculty member to serve on its IT Advisory Board.
