Rounds: WOUND CARE BASICS

  • Check every morning before rounds!
  • Note: M3s play a major role in daily wound care. Being prepared will help the flow of rounds.
  • 1. Type (See Wound Classifications in II)
  • - What am I dealing with?
  • - What does it look like (clean, intact, red)?
  • - Is it draining? And what does it look like?

  • 2. Commonly used closures
  • - Dermabond/Indermil (glue)
  • - Suture
  • - Staple
  • - Wound vac
  • - Open, healing by secondary intention

  • 3. Most post-op dressings taken down POD#2
  • - Check the dressings for drainage POD#1
  • - Take initiative! If it is your patient – take the dressing down when you pre-round. If unsure, ask beforehand.
  • - Leave steri-strips in place.
  • - Prepare dressing supplies while pre-rounding.
