What we do

(SMS) provides occupational safety, health, and environmental stewardship services to the University of Michigan Hospitals & Health Centers (UMHHC), in support of the concept that responsibility and accountability for safety and health are expectations of each organizational unit.

SMS provides consultation, training, and education related to fire safety, radiation safety industrial hygiene, and ergonomics.

Our Mission

To lead University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers in fulfilling its responsibilities to achieve "world class" performance in safety, health and environmental stewardship.

Our Goals

We will accomplish this by:

• Supporting development of a "best practice" safety culture
  
• Providing resources for service, education and facilitation
  
• Expecting full accountability and performance from all staff in creating a safe, healthful and environmentally responsible workplace

The SMS staff consists of a Safety Director, Hospital Safety Coordinator, Safety Operations Manager, Health Physicist, Ergonomics Specialist, Safety Education Specialist, Construction Safety Specialist, Business Manager, two Industrial Hygienists and additional support staff.
