The Comprehensive Pediatric Hemoglobinopathy Program clinic is held every Wednesday generally from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic area of the Cancer Center (Floor B1) of the University of Michigan Hospitals. Each patient must check in at Reception B for their scheduled appointments. Patients are seen during these times for annual evaluations, hospital follow-up visits, management visits and support visits. Patients requiring transfusion as part of a planned transfusion program are also scheduled during this time. Occasionally, patients may be scheduled earlier in the day due to other appointments, research studies or family needs.
Patients who have acute needs may be accommodated in several ways. A Pediatric hematology nurse is available during the week by phone to discuss home management or minor illnesses as well as provide support or education between visits. A Pediatric hematologist/oncologist is available by beeper 24 hours/day 365 days/year at 734-936-6267 (ask for the Pediatric hematologist/oncologist on-call).
Patients ages 21-30: You may also call the Pediatric hematology nurse or on-call Pediatric hematologist, or visit the Adult Emergency Room for further evaluation and management.
Some children will receive a portion of their routine visits and acute care locally through their primary care provider. This will be determined based on severity of disease, complications, primary care comfort level, local services that are available and child/family preference.
