The 12th International Symposium on Gastrointestinal Hormones will be held at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan, (USA) September 16-20, 1998.

The role of gastrointestinal hormones as important regulatory factors is generally accepted. Gut peptides are ubiquitous in their expression and have taken on increased significance in recent years as the breadth of their biological actions has expanded to include roles as neurotransmitters, trophic factors, and modulators of behavior. This symposium will highlight the newest insights regarding the biology of gastrointestinal peptides as well as the pathophysiological implications of these observations. The integrated program will cover the full range of new findings including molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology to organ physiology, and behavior in health and disease. The symposium will provide an ideal forum to present and discuss the most significant recent contributions in the field. A major goal of the meeting is to provide travel support for promising young investigators to present their research and have the opportunity to interact with established contributors.

Take a step back in time. Board one of the ferries which shuttles visitors to and from Mackinac Island. As you approach the island, one place dominates the view. Sitting high on the Bluff overlooking the Straits of Mackinac is the world's largest summer hotel-Grand Hotel. For over 100 years she has taken her guests back to another era-one of elegance and charm.

Here one can stroll along the world's longest porch, and view the peaceful sunken gardens, spacious lawn, and miles of beaches along the shores of Lakes Huron and Michigan. In the Grand tradition, one can enjoy High Tea daily while listening to live classical music recitals. Recreational activities are extensive. Golfers can enjoy the 18-hole Jewel featuring the Grand nine and new Woods nine courses. There are four clay tennis courts, the famous Esther Williams swimming pool, whirlpool, and complete exercise facilities. Bicycles can be rented at the hotel and riding stables are located nearby.

Visit Margaret's Garden, created for all who love the beauty of gardens offering unique gifts with garden and nature themes including beautiful floral arrangements. Grand Hotel also offers a newly created children's program. There is a luncheon and hike program midday as well as an evening program that features a children's table in the Main Dining Room for dinner. There is no charge for this service to guests of Grand Hotel. Complete information regarding the children's program may be attained by calling the Hotel prior to arrival and to insure space.

Mackinac Island itself is an added bonus of attending a conference at the Grand. Numerous recreational opportunities are within a five-minute walk of the hotel. There are shops for browsing, bicycling, trails to be explored, horse-drawn carriage tours, Fort Mackinac, and museums. For more time to take in all the attractions at your leisure, make reservations to arrive early or stay after the conference.

Climate/Attire

The climate at this time of year is high 60s during the day, and low 60s or high 50s in the evening. It is suggested you bring a jacket and/or sweater for the evenings. Attire on the island and for the meeting is casual.
