Fellowship: Vascular/Interventional Radiology
The program offers a one-year ACGME accredited fellowship training in vascular and interventional radiology. The objective of the program is to provide fellows with a comprehensive, supervised educational experience in vascular and interventional radiology according to the ACGME-approved "Special Requirements for Subspecialty Training in Vascular and Interventional Radiology." The training program offers didactic and clinical experiences that encompass the full clinical spectrum of vascular and interventional radiology.
Trainees will have the opportunity to carry out all necessary procedures under close supervision, including pre-procedure evaluation of patients, various vascular and nonvascular special procedures, interpretation of diagnostic images, consultation with clinicians, admission to the interventional radiology service, and post-procedure follow-up care. Trainees will be instructed in proper use of physiologic monitoring, noninvasive vascular imaging, antibiotics, narcotics, conscious sedation, and other drugs commonly used in special procedures. Examples of diagnostic vascular procedures include peripheral arteriography, visceral arteriography, pulmonary arteriography, venography, splenoportography, carbon dioxide angiography, adrenal venous sampling, parathyroid venous sampling, selective arterial secretin injection for localization of gastrinoma, and selective calcium injection for localization of insulinoma. Examples of vascular interventional procedures include infusion therapy, catheter-directed thrombolysis, mechanical thrombofragmentation, embolotherapy, angioplasty and related percutaneous recanalization procedures for arterial and venous occlusions, stent placement, filter insertion, foreign body removal, TIPS, AAA endovascular repair, thoracic endografting, percutaneous fenestration for aortic dissection, and central venous access. Examples of nonvascular procedures include percutaneous and transvenous biopsy, abscess drainage, biliary interventions (cholecystostomy, biliary drainage, stone extraction, dilation, choledochoscopy, and stenting), GI interventions (percutaneous gastrostomy, gastrojejunostomy, jejunostomy, cecostomy, and dilation), and genitourinary interventions (percutaneous nephrostomy, dilation, and stone extraction), and vertebroplasty.
VIR conferences include daily morning rounds, VIR didactic lecture, VIR follow-up conferences, IR quality assurance rounds, vascular surgery/IR teaching conference, and vascular basic science lecture.
Time is also allotted for training in MRA and CTA. Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in the vascular clinic service with vascular surgeons. Fellows are encouraged to participate in ongoing clinical and basic research projects.
