Barium Enema - Double Contrast 

1.  0-5 years:
    Only single contrast examination can be done.

2.  6-17 years:
    a) Liquid diet for 3 days prior to the examination.
    b) Clear liquid for 24 hours before the examination
       (no milk products).
    c) Bisacodyl (Dulcolax tablets) given at 11 AM 2 days
       before the examination and 1 day before the examination.
         Dosage:  15-30 kilograms - 1 tablet
                    >30 kilograms - 2 tablets
    d) An adult Fleet enema on the morning of the examination.

NOTE:
    A.  In children in whom Fleet enema is contraindicated, please
        consult radiologist.
    B.  If a colon biopsy has been performed the barium enema should
        be delayed several days.
    C.  Diabetic patients should have this clearly indicated on the
        requisition and mentioned when scheduling.
