Pediatric Barium Enema:
Considerations of ordering:
0-5 years:
 Only a single contrast exam
 can be done. 


0-4 years:
 Liquid diet for 24 hours.
 Ped fleet enema at 7-8 PM before AM
 test & AM before test.
 NPO 4 hours prior to test.  

5-17 years:
 Low residue diet for 2 days prior 
 to test.  Clear liquid diet for 
 24 hours (no milk).
 Dulcolax tablets at 11 AM day before 
 test.

 Dulcolax dosage:
 15-30 kg       1 tablet
 over 30 kg     2 tablets

 At 8 PM prior to test administer
 Fleet enema and repeat 3 hours 
 prior to test.  

 Fleet dosage:
 Up to 6 years  Ped Fleet enema
 Over 6 years   Adult Fleet enema


6-17 years:
 Liquid diet for 3 days prior 
 to test.  
 Dulcolax tablets at 11 AM 2 days and 
 1 day before test.

 Dulcolax dosage:
 15-30 kg       1 tablet
 over 30 kg     2 tablets

 Clear liquids for 24 hours prior.
 Adult Fleet enema the AM of test.
