Thyroid Scan

* Inform your physician if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

You have been scheduled for a Thyroid study which involves the use of a small amount of radioactive material.  The level of radioactivity used is extremely low and has no side effects.

You will be positioned on an imaging table, under a special detector called a gamma camera.  The camera does not produce and radiation.  It will be places close to the part of the body being imaged.

Patient Preparation

Stop all thyroid medications.  Your physician will advise you.

Procedure

 A small amount of a radioactive substance will be injected into a vein.  Ten minutes later, painless images will be taken of your thyroid gland for about 1 hour.
