PET Scan for Tumor Localization

You have been scheduled for a PET study which involves the use of a small amount of radioactive material.  The level of radioactivity used is low and has no side effects.

You will be positioned on an imaging table, inside  a special detector called a PET scanner.  You will also receive a CT scan of the same area as the PET scan to aid the physicians in interpreting your study.

Patient Preparation

Non-diabetic patients:

Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to your appointment
No strenuous activity for 48 hours prior to your appointment.

Diabetic patients:       

Nothing to eat or drink for 12 hours prior to your appointment
No insulin for 6 hours prior to your appointment.
No Metformin for 48 hours prior to your appointment.
No strenuous activity for 48 hours prior to your appointment.

Procedure

You will be asked to drink a glass of oral contrast.  An I. V. catheter will be placed in your arm for an injection of a radioactive tracer.  The injection will occur 30 minutes after you drink the contrast.  You will have to wait for 1 hour after the injection before your images can be taken.  During that hour, you will be instructed to drink a second glass of oral contrast.  Images lasting approximately 25 minutes will be then be taken.
