Lymphatic Scan for Lymphedema

* Inform your physician if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

You have been scheduled for a Lymphatic study which involves the use of a small amount of radioactive material.  The level of radioactivity used is extremely low and has no side effects.

You will be positioned on an imaging table, under  a special detector called a gamma camera.  The camera does not produce any radiation.  It will be placed close to the part of your body being imaged.

Patient Preparation

None.

Procedure

You will be injected  with a small amount of radioactive material either on the tops of your feet for patients with leg swelling, or on the tops of your hands for patients with arm swelling.  Painless images will be obtained  approximately 20 minutes after the injections, and then repeated again either 1 or 2 hours later. Delayed imaging 3 to 4 hours later may be done if necessary.
