About the Grand Hotel

Take a step back in time! Board a ferry to Mackinac Island. As you approach the island, one structure dominates your view – the Grand Hotel. Built in 1887, this is the largest summer hotel in the world. The front porch is said to be the largest in the world and gives a splendid view of the Straits of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge. The sunsets are phenomenal! The Grand Hotel is famous for its unparalleled attention to service and hospitality. Meals are a special occasion. There is an excellent children’s program. Many recreational activities are available on-site including tennis, golf, swimming and bicycle rental.

One of the highlights of the Radiology at Mackinac course is the Friday evening reception on the porch. We will have one end of the porch to ourselves with food, drink and music.

About Mackinac Island

Step back in time. Mackinac Island, itself, is a truly special place. Did you know that in 1875 Mackinac Island became the second national park in the United States, after Yellowstone? In 1895, the island was turned over to the state of Michigan and it has since been preserved as a state park. There are no cars – all transportation is by horse drawn carriage, by bicycle or on foot. The town offers many shops for browsing and nice places to grab a bite to eat. Don’t forget the fudge! The town is full of history dating to Revolutionary War times and before. There are several historical sites and museums in the town. The imposing Fort Mackinac overlooks the town. The Fort is open for tours and presents many live recreations and demonstrations of life at the fort for soldiers and their families. The majority of the island is natural – with trails for hiking, horseback riding and biking. An 8 mile paved “road” parallels the shore around the perimeter of the island – a “must do” bike ride.

Additional historical sites and points of natural interest are located on the mainland in Mackinaw City and in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Getting There

Mackinaw City (lower peninsula) and St. Ignace (upper peninsula) are located at either end of the Mackinac Bridge and are easily accessible by car. From either location, it is a short ferry ride to Mackinac Island. The ferries run approximately every 30 minutes and the ferry ride to the island is about 30 minutes in length. Your luggage will be handled by the ferry operator and delivered to your room at the Grand Hotel. From the dock, one can choose to walk the short distance to the Grand Hotel or to take a horse drawn carriage.

Pellston Regional Airport serves the Mackinac area and is serviced by Northwest Airlines ( www.nwa.com). The airport is located 16 miles to the south. Ground transportation from the airport to the ferry terminal at Mackinaw City is arranged via Wolverine Stages (800-825-1450).
