Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

Researchers at the University of Michigan Department of Radiation Oncology created one of the first systems for three-dimensional treatment planning. 3-D Conformal Therapy revolutionized the delivery of radiation care by allowing doctors to target tumors more precisely, thus sparing healthy tissue from damage. This pioneering work helped redefine the technical delivery of radiation therapy and is now used widely throughout the world.

We have continued this research by developing a unique method of delivering Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT).

In addition to these technical developments, our scientists are designing better ways of combining medications with radiation to more effectively treat tumors, spare normal tissue from damage and minimize side effects.
