Regulatory Agencies
In terms of safety, hospitals are regulated by a number of agencies including:
- Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services – CMS regulates all aspects of safety as it affects the care of patients who receive Medicare or Medicaid services.
- Federal Aviation Administration – The FAA regulates how dangerous goods are shipped by air.
- The Joint Commission – The Joint Commission regulates all aspects of safety as it affects patient care.
- Michigan Department of Community Health – MDCH conducts specific field investigations relative to complaints, allegations and corrective actions.
- Michigan Department of Environmental Quality – MDEQ regulates safety as it relates to Michigan's environment and public health.
- Michigan Department of Transportation – MDOT regulates the transportation of dangerous goods in commerce.
- Michigan Occupational Safety & Health Administration – MIOSHA regulates occupational safety and health.
- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency – The EPA regulates safety as it pertains to federal environmental laws.
- U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission – The NRC regulates the use of nuclear materials.
