Maria Mei-ha Wong,
Ph.D.
Dr. Wong is a Research Investigator at UMARC.
She is a developmental psychologist who has expertise in life-span
human development and research methodology. Her research interests
include (i)the role of negative affect (e.g., depression,
anxiety, low self-esteem) in the development of substance
use disorders among children and adolescents; (ii)gender and
ethnic/cultural differences in the relations between negative
affect and substance use disorders; (iii)how negative affect
may be regulated (especially through changes in motivation
and expectancies) and how such regulation may affect the prevention
and intervention of substance use disorders; (iv)techniques
for longitudinal data analysis. Current projects examine (i)the
effect of negative affect on externalizing behavior problems
& (ii)how parental characteristics affect behavior problems
and school achievement among children of alcoholics. Both
projects analyze data from the University of Michigan-Michigan
State University longitudinal study (PI: Dr. Robert A. Zucker).
