Our Mission
Our mission is to be the treatment
center of choice for people of all ages to discover and fulfill
their potential for recovery from alcohol and other drug problems.
Our services are rooted in the professional and recovering communities,
supported by research, and delivered with compassion, hope,
and respect for diversity. We are committed to achieving positive
outcomes and to sharing information about effective treatments
with our colleagues, trainees, and the community.
Treatment Philosophy
We look at recovery from multiple
perspectives, with the understanding that your physical, emotional,
social and spiritual well-being are critical to your recovery.
We develop individualized plans based on your needs, your responsibilities,
and the severity of your problem. We develop recovery plans
with family members, friends and others whose lives have been
affected by alcohol and other drugs. We base our treatment on
the wisdom of successfully recovering people, the latest research
results, and our professional knowledge to meet each person's
needs. We offer assessments and a full range of therapy options
for individuals, groups, couples and families at various times
of day and varying levels of intensity.
Comprehensive Assessment
No two recoveries are identical.
With professional guidance, each person determines the effect
of alcohol and other drugs in his/her life and identifies personal
strengths and areas of need. After completing an assessment
of psychological, biological, spiritual and social areas, individuals
are encouraged to examine their perceptions and feelings about
various aspects of their life. Regardless of the level of treatment,
each person is engaged in developing a specific plan for his
or her treatment and areas of need.
Dual Diagnosis and Psychiatric
Services
Many patients who abuse substances
also suffer from symptoms of depression and anxiety. In some
cases, the symptoms diminish markedly with abstinence and treatment
for the substance problem. In other cases, the careful use of
non-addictive medications brings symptom relief. Staff members
are well-trained to monitor these symptoms and refer patients
for on-site psychiatric consultation when needed. The psychiatrist
conducts a thorough evaluation to distinguish symptoms in need
of additional help (such as medication) from those which will
disappear with abstinence. The ready availability of psychiatric
consultation and ongoing monitoring for depression and anxiety
allows patients with "dual diagnoses" (both a substance and
mental health problem) to receive all their treatment with one
team. For patients already receiving mental health care, UMATS
works with their community psychiatrist or therapist to coordinate
care for both problems.
