Child and Adolescent
Psychiatry
The Division
of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry currently has more
tenured faculty and grant funding than at any time in its
history. Research programs on major depression (N. Ghaziuddin,
M.D.), suicidal behavior (C. King, Ph.D.), obsessive-compulsive
disorder (G. Hanna, M.D.), pervasive developmental disorders
(M. Ghaziuddin, M.D. and L. Tsai, M.D.), and molecular neurobiology
(P. Patel, M.D., Ph.D.) have been developed with federal
and private foundation grants. Roseanne Armitage, Ph.D.,
Director of the Sleep
and Chronophysiology Laboratory leads several studies
focused onsleep and depression in children and adolescents.
The programs support systematic research on the genetics,
neurobiology, phenomenology, and treatment of severe mental
disorders in children and adolescents. Several studies involve
collaborations with investigators at the School of Public
Health, Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute,
and Addiction Research Center at the University of Michigan
as well as with investigators at other major universities.
Research opportunities will continue to expand with the
recruitment of new faculty for the Child and Adolescent
Division. This is being done in conjunction with the development
of the Depression Center in the Department of Psychiatry
and the University of Michigan Life Sciences Initiative.
A research training track combining clinical and research
training in child and adolescent psychiatry is available
to residents in the Department of Psychiatry.
