Postgraduate course in
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
for foreign doctors

Purpose:

The purpose of the course is to provide an overview of common psychiatric and behavioral disorders of children and adolescents to overseas medical practitioners. 

Description:

  • The course will run for one year full-time.
  • It will be open to qualified psychiatrists and pediatricians with proficiency in English.
  • It will focus on teaching clinical skills including phenomenology; differential diagnosis and treatment.
  • Selected trainees will be given the opportunity to join ongoing research projects.
  • They will be sponsored by their home countries and expected to return home after completion of their training.
  • Up to two trainees will be accepted at any one time.
  • The course fee is $10,000.  Applicants are expected to arrange their own funding.  They will also be responsible for their accommodation and other expenses.
  • They will work under supervision as observers and will not be responsible for direct patient care.

Rotations:

The following rotations will be offered.  Duration of the training may vary.

  1. Autism Spectrum Disorders Program: 3 months
  2. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Clinic: 3 months
  3. Child development and psychosocial clinic: 3 months
  4. Psychopharmacology and inpatient psychiatry: 2 weeks
  5. Depression and Mood Disorders: 2 weeks
  6. Electives (Research; Forensic Psychiatry; Behavior Disorders etc.): 2 months.

Didactics:

  1. Didactic core: one day a week (8.30 AM to 2.30 PM)
  2. Journal club: one day a week
  3. Grand rounds and case presentations: one day a week.

Assessment:

Trainees will be assessed on the basis of their day-to-day performance.  They will be required to take a written and an oral examination at the completion of their training.

Certification:

On satisfactory completion of the course, the trainees will receive certificates stating that they were Visiting Fellows in the Department of Psychiatry (Child) with the details of their training.
