The Home Page of Marilynn Rosenthal, Ph.D.

Marilynn M. Rosenthal Ph.D. is professor, medical sociologist and director of the Program in Health Policy Studies at the University of Michigan in Dearborn. She is an Associate Director of the UM medical school's Program in Society and Medicine, coordinating the University of Michigan Forum on Health Policy since 1994. She also is part of the medical school liberal arts Inteflex program for premedical students.

Her primary research interests are in comparative health care systems and physician self regulation. She has written on British and Swedish doctors and on aspects of Swedish health policy and the Swedish no-fault patient injury plan, as well as on topics from physician supply planning in cross cultural perspective to Swedish primary care policy. She is active in organizing international conferences. She has been a long-standing member and a chair of the Medical Affairs Advisory Committee to the University of Michigan Vice President for Medical and Health Affairs as well as serving on a variety of other university committees. Prof. Rosenthal's eight books include THE INCOMPETENT DOCTOR: Behind Closed Doors (1995), HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS AND THEIR PATIENTS: AN INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE (edited with Marcel Frenkel MD, 1992), DEALING WITH MEDICAL MALPRACTICE: THE BRITISH AND SWEDISH EXPERIENCE (1988) THE INCOMPETENT DOCTOR is a study of the informal techniques British and Swedish doctors use to deal with colleagues who are becoming a 'problem.' This book was the subject of a conference at the Nordic School of Public Health in Sweden, August, 1995 and won a 1995 Baxter Distinguished Submission Award. Her most recent book is MEDICAL MISHAPS: PIECES OF THE PUZZLE (edited with Mulcahy and Bostock).  Open University Press, 1999.  A speaking tour about this book included presentations in London, Stockholm, Sidney, Canberra, and Aukland.
