The UMHS Web Environment
Because the information needs of those affiliated with UMHS are very different from those visiting the site from "outside," there are two separate home pages, each designed with a specific audience in mind.
- The UMHS Internal Home Page (http://www.med.umich.edu/i/) is designed to provide easy access to the resources that UMHS people use most frequently; it can be considered the gateway to the UMHS Intranet. This and any internal page (a page is internal if its address starts with http://www.med.umich.edu/i/ ) on the www.med.umich.edu site is only available from workstations located on the University of Michigan network (Note: as of 9/27/02, access to internal pages is limited to UMHS workstations) , and to those using MCIT dial-in services. (More detailed information about internal pages is also available.)
The UMHS internal page should be set as the default home page for UMHS workstations that don't have other specific requirements. For clinical workstations, the Clinical Home Page may be used instead.
For information on making your www.med.umich.edu Web site (or any part of it) internal, see Restricting Access to your Web Pages.
- The UMHS External Home Page (http://www.med.umich.edu/) is intended to be a gateway to the information and services UMHS provides to patients, visitors, health care professionals, and anyone else wanting to know more about UMHS. Contents of this and all other external pages are easily accessible from the internal pages.
Note that www.med.umich.edu is not the only web server in use at UMHS. Several departments such as Pathology and Surgery run their own webservers. Their definitions of internal and external may differ from those at www.med.umich.edu.
