From continent to continent, researchers take us to new horizons and expand our understanding of the universe. But sometimes by accident or on purpose, they have made serious mis-steps, causing harm to themselves, their colleagues, or the scientific enterprise. In this engaging discussion we will examine 6 – 10 famous “slips” here and in other places. From lab safety to control of special agents, data integrity to human subject protection, public trust relies heavily on scientists steadily “doing the right thing”. Finally we will consider how they might have been avoided, and what practices and habits of mind and of interpersonal behavior will keep researchers moving forward successfully.
