Background
PNR&D is located inside the U-M's new Biomedical Science Research Building
The Program for Neurology Research & Discovery (PNR&D) is a group of scientists, clinicians, and students working toward the common aim of understanding and curing neurological disease. With this in mind, the PNR&D has three primary goals:
-
To advance our understanding of the causes of neurological diseases
-
To develop new treatment options for our patients
-
To provide information to the community about the importance of basic scientific research in the understanding of disease and in the development of new treatments
Neurological diseases and disorders are devastating, life-altering conditions resulting from the deterioration of the nervous system. Some commonly known neurological diseases include ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and Alzheimer’s Disease. This same deterioration also contributes to the complications of diabetes (neuropathy and retinopathy), trauma(such as spinal cord injury), stroke, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. Although there are currently no cures and few treatments, recent scientific advances provide us with hope for a better understanding of these diseases and potential treatments.
So far, our research has already prompted two clinical trials for new treatments, and we have advanced understanding of how and why neurological diseases develop. I invite you to learn more about our research and how you can get involved with our goal to cure neurological diseases. Thank you for your interest and support.
