Orthotics & Prosthetics: Program Outline

I Introduction:

A minimum of two weeks will be spent in orientation. This time is spent familiarizingthe residents to the division and to evaluate his/her technical skills. The resident will also delineate his/her personal goals for the year which include the directed study geared towards presentation to a regional or national audience.

II. Clinical Experiences:

Each resident is assigned to a clinical staff member for a specific period of time. They will shadow the clinician as he/she attends to his/her various roles. As each clinician has primary responsibility for a particular clinic, this allows the resident to concentrate on a specific aspect of Orthotic-Prosthetic practice for a sufficient time so as to form both generalities and specifics of opinion. Currently, the clinics being covered include:

Resident Prosthetists and Orthotists are expected to take part in covering on-call service on weekends. This will be on a rotation basis. The resident should expect to be on-call every fourth weekend. He/she will always be under the direction of and accompanied by a certified clinician. The amount of actual time on call will very according to need and the clinician's discretion. The on-call participation is viewed as an opportunity to experience unique situations and procedures not always available during normal clinic hours.

III. Technical Requirements:

As often as possible, the resident will follow a project from clinical inception to fitting. It is our position that, while the best utilization of a clinician's time is typically not in fabrication, a knowledge of the skills, tools and techniques of fabrication are an absolute necessity in an optimal clinical practice. This knowledge facilitates the communication between the clinician and technical staff and lays a cornerstone for a structure of mutual professional respect.

Each resident is required to produce a directed study during the year's program. The directed study should be geared toward submission for publication or presentation at a national or regional meeting.

VI. Dress Code:

Professional dress is required and must comply with University of Michigan Health System and UM Orthotics and Prosthetics Center policies.

VII. Hours of Residency Assignment:

This year-long residency is viewed by the Orthotics and Prosthetic Center as a continuation of the residents' education, not as their first year of employment. As such, the resident should anticipate devoting the time necessary to accomplish assigned projects. Punctuality in attendance and completion of assignments is mandatory.

VIII. Requirements for Application:

  1. Each candidate must possess a Baccalaureate or Master degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics from an NCOPE accredited program, or a Baccalaureate degree and a post graduate certificate in an NCOPE accredited Orthotics and/or Prosthetics program. If the candidate has academic credentials outside of the United States, the education must be approved by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics as acceptable to qualify the applicant to sit for the Clinical Certification Board Exams.
  2. Official transcripts are required for application consideration.
  3. Each candidate is require to submit 2 (two) letters of professional reference.
  4. Each candidate is required to submit an essay addressing the reason for wanting to attend the UM Orthotics and Prosthetics residency program and a statement of personal and professional goals.
  5. Each candidate is required to submit a résumé.
  6. Each candidate is required to submit an application fee of $35.00.
  7. Only completed applications will be considered and must be received by March 1 for the July start date. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

IX. Performance Evaluation:

Evaluation of resident's performance and progress is ongoing. If a resident is found to be deficient, he/she is to be given a letter stating the deficiency(ies), requirements for improvements and a time frame in which they must be implemented. If, by this time, the deficiencies have not been rectified, action could include probation and/or possible termination from the program.
