About Our Services

We provide a continuum of comprehensive medical and rehabilitative services that begin immediately after injury, proceed through rehabilitation and continue after discharge from the hospital, through the Department's outpatient clinics and support services.

We also develop and implement innovative service programs to address the physical and psychosocial needs of those with SCI that are frequently unmet through traditional rehabilitation.

At the U-M Health System, your care will be coordinated by physicians specializing in comprehensive spinal cord injury management. You also will receive the immediate attention of a team of skilled rehabilitation professionals.

Your rehabilitation team will get to know your individualized needs and those of your family. Because the U-M program is committed to maximizing continuity of care, SCI team members will be involved with you throughout your stay. We will also communicate with you and your family members regarding your satisfaction with the care we are providing, tailoring our services to meet your rehabilitation goals.

Rehabilitation and More: The University of Michigan Health System Network of Services

We are located in a tertiary, acute-care hospital with a network of outpatient satellite clinics, so all the resources you may need are interconnected.

In addition to the team of rehabilitation experts who are part of the adult and pediatric SCI programs, other medical expertise you may require as your rehabilitation progresses is also immediately available. These include orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery, urology, acute care surgery, anesthesiology, plastic surgery, internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and other medical subspecialties.

Unique in the State

U-M's program is the only Model System in the Midwest region that has been federally funded since 1985.

Ventilator Program:
U-M's program for ventilator-dependent patients is one of a few such programs in the country that provide the necessary equipment, training and staff expertise to care for individuals who are unable to breathe without assistance and need physical rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation Engineering:
U-M is Michigan's only SCI program with full-time rehabilitation engineers on staff.

Pediatric Rehabilitation:
The U-M program is the only SCI program in the state that has specialized services for children and adolescents with SCI.

Center for Independent Living Partnership:
U-M's strong partnership with the Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living(AACIL) offers trained peer resource counselors who have a disability themselves. These individuals meet with patients in groups or individually, providing counseling and insight into how one can successfully live with an SCI.

Positive Transitions Thanks to a Committed Local Community

Our program has strong ties with:

The Ann Arbor Transportation Authority's A-Ride service for persons with disabilities.

The Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living (AACIL), an organization that provides services, information and resources to people who have a disability

Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) the state agency for vocational rehabilitation of people with physical disabilities provides an experienced and highly qualified MRS agency counselor in a local office. This individual can facilitate early vocational rehabilitation planning.

Our Goal: Your Freedom and Wellness

Our aim is to maximize your recovery and health to allow you full participation in the rehabilitation activities necessary so that you can achieve your goals. We believe that it is possible to live a full and satisfying life after a spinal cord injury.
