Anthony Chiodo, MD
Director of Spinal Cord Injury
Medicine and the Program Director of the Spinal Cord Injury
Fellowship
Dr. Chiodo earned his medical degree from the
University of Connecticut and completed his residency in
PM&R at the University of Michigan. He is Board Certified in
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord Injury
Medicine, Pain Management and Electrodiagnostic Medicine.
Dr. Chiodo’s special areas of interests are spinal cord
injury care, spine, and sports medicine. In the area of
spinal cord injury care, his areas of concentration include
spasticity, ventilator management, and pain evaluation and
management. His hobbies include skiing (water and snow),
running, biking and gardening

Denise G. Tate,
PhD, ABPP, FACRM
Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine,
Psychologist, and Clinical Psychologist and Co-Director
Model Spinal Cord Injury Care System
Dr. Tate has a PhD from Michigan State University and is
a Diplomat of the American Board of Professional Psychology.
She directs two post doctoral research training programs
and is the Associate Chair for Research for the department.
She is the Attending Psychologist for all SCI inpatients
and also provides outpatient care. Her research focuses on
outcomes, spinal cord injury, adaptation to injury/illness,
and quality of life. Photography is one of her personal
hobbies.

Gianna M Rodriguez, MD
Attending Physician – Spinal Cord Injury
Service
Dr. Rodriguez earned her medical degree at the
University of the East, Manila, Philippines and
completed her residency at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s
Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois. She is Board
Certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and
Spinal Cord Injury Medicine. In addition to spinal cord
injury, Dr. Rodriguez’s interests include traumatic
brain injury and sports rehabilitation. Some of her past
research has focused on pain in SCI. She enjoys training
and recreational racing in triathlons and marathons,
deep sea diving, and travel.

Catherine Spires, MD, PT
Director of Outpatient Clinics
Dr. Spires earned her degree in Physical Therapy from Wayne
State University and her medical degree at Michigan State
University. She completed a residency in PM&R at the
University of Michigan. Dr. Spires is Board Certified in
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord Injury and
Electrodiagnostic Medicine. In addition to spinal cord
injury care, she specializes in treatment of burns and
amputation. Dr. Spires’ outside interests include travel,
music, and biking.
