Rehabilitation Engineering Program: Clinical Internship
ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY CLINICAL TRAINING PROGRAM
UMREP offers a specialized clinical internship training program for those who qualify. Entrance requirements for the internship include an appropriate graduate degree or its equivalent in Biomedical or Rehabilitation Engineering. Special considerations can be made under the direction of the program director. The internship may be well-suited to those interested in obtaining their ATP or RET but do not have adequate clinical experience.
The duration of the internship is one year full time or if enrolled concurrently in an academic program, 5-6 terms of half time. The internship includes clinical service and laboratory training as well as extensive reading on a broad range of assistive technologies and technology-related service in the areas of mobility, seating and positioning, augmentative communication, computer access, computer literacy and training, environment control, manipulation aids, and other assistive technologies. Additionally, interns are expected to obtain hands-on experience with the complete array of specific rehabilitation technology systems and equipment available within the UMREP. Students participate in all aspects of the UMREP service delivery program ranging from technical lab work, to system set-up, to client evaluation and training. Medical record and written documentation of client history, visits, evaluation, and equipment and training recommendations are also an important part of the clinical internship.
