Research: Adapted Cognitive Assessment Lab (ACAL)

Traditional methods of testing cognition and learning are not accessible to children with severe physical and speech impairments and thus do not provide accurate information. Our team of investigators recognizes that accurate test information is critical for children’s education and life planning and as a result have developed Adapted Cognitive Assessments to address this need.

ACAL Investigators have developed alternative testing methods, in part, by using Assistive Technology (AT) with adapted versions of cognitive tests. Results provide information about cognitive and academic aptitude for children whose abilities could not otherwise have been revealed through traditional, standardized cognitive testing in a school setting or traditional clinical setting.

Our goals are to develop cognitive assessment procedures that provide parents and educators with a more accurate and well-rounded profile of the child’s abilities.  This type of  individualized profile can then generate appropriate supports in their school, home and community settings.  To support this goal, we have compiled a list of  Parent/Teacher Resources to encourage the sharing of information to promote collaboration among all parties.  Our research findings have now been published in chapters of prominent books and scientific journals, as well as consumer-oriented publications over the last few years; please refer to our Presentations & Publications for these published works.
